A CUTTING-
Edge battery that can be sprayed-
Today, a research team painted on almost any surface and tested everything from bathroom tiles to beer cups.
This design can completely change the design of lithium
Ion batteries that power laptops, mobile phones and electric vehicles-
Use a thinner device built in
In the power supply.
Use a liquid version of the same ingredient in traditional lithium
Ion batteries, the team sprayed their invention with several layers onto the surface of glass slides, stainless steel sheets, glazed tiles and mugs.
\"Basically, using this method, we can convert any object or surface into a battery,\" said lead author Neelam Singh . \" He is an engineering student at Rice University, Texas. Lithium-ion (or Li-ion)
The battery works by transferring the charge between the negative electrode and the positive electrode.
They are light in weight and have high power output and storage capacity compared to other rechargeable batteries, and are safer.
For the prototype, the team created liquid, drawable versions of five layered components ---
Cathode, anode and polymer separator.
\"We first convert all the parts of the battery into paint.
\"Then, we can use these paint to actually paint the battery on any surface, using only the spray gun,\" Mr Singh said . \".
The mug is used to demonstrate the versatile application of paint to objects of different shapes.
In an experiment, the team sprayed the battery on nine bathroom tiles that were connected to each other.
One of the tiles has a solar cell charged with a white lab light.
Once charged and connected, the tile \"provides enough energy to power 40 red LEDs (light-LEDs
The team\'s report in the journal Natural science reports says that for more than six hours,a steady 2. 4 volts.
The team said the performance of the battery was \"comparable\" to that of the traditional type and described the breakthrough as \"a paradigm change in battery design \".
Unlike existing batteries, the paint-able version does not require additional storage space, so it is easier to integrate into existing battery designsPower equipment.
It also opens up exciting possibilities for solar power generation and storage.
\"The tiles we converted into batteries can be used to build the entire exterior wall of the house,\" Mr Singh said . \".
\"Then, walls made of these batteries can be covered with solar cells, and this combination of solar cells and batteries can be used to capture and store solar energy into useful power.
\"The painted battery is charged 60 times --
The discharge cycle shows that the capacity is \"only a small drop,\" Singh said \".
Researchers have applied for a patent on the technology and they will continue to improve the patent. Paintable Li-
Ion batteries use toxic, flammable and potentially corrosive liquid electrolyte and must be used in oxygenand moisture-

\"What is exciting is the development of lithium --
Ion batteries that are not sensitive to air or moisture
Said author Charudatta Galande.
This will greatly reduce the cost of manufacturing and packaging.
With it, you might imagineit-
You can buy the spray kit yourself from the warehouse at home and apply the battery on any surface you like at home.
