Elon Musk has agreed to build a factory called \"the world\'s largest virtual power plant\" by launching solar panels and Tesla batteries to 50,000 families in South Australia.
The plan will be completed in the next four years and will see any excess energy stored in each battery being fed back to the grid in order to provide electricity to the rest of the state when needed.
The South Australian government says participating households will generate a total of 250 megawatts of electricity, about half of the energy generated by typical coal.

These are expected to be paid for in future electricity sales.
If the trial is successful, there will be 24,000 public housing units available until the full launch of the system to private homeowners who want to participate in 2019.
According to the state government, families involved in the program can expect their energy bills to be reduced by 30, and even those who are not involved will benefit from lower costs and fewer power outages.
The government claims that, day and night, each energy system will generate a \"considerable\" proportion of the choice needs of each household.
It also says that the entire system will produce the daily energy needs of the entire state, initially at $32 (£18m)
It will be provided from government grants and renewable technology funds to bring projects to the ground.
A total of $800 (£450m)
Costisexpected will be funded by private investors.

The effectiveness of Tesla batteries is being closely watched, although southern Australia has recently been asked to export energy to Victoria, the latest state to struggle with a grid overload caused by high temperatures.
