Tesla has completed its construction of what it calls the world\'s most powerful giant lithium-ion battery, and is expected to be tested in the next few days before the December 1 operating deadline.
Tesla\'s Powerpack battery array has been installed next to the French company Neoen\'s Hornsdale wind farm near Jamestown in north-central South Australia.
South Australian taxpayers will spend up to $50 million to subsidize this 100.
Megawatt Battery
In return, the SA government will be able to get some output of the battery to provide stable services to the grid.
If supply is insufficient this summer, the government also has the right to use the full output of the battery to prevent power outages.
As a market operator (AEMO)
Instruct the power supplier to turn off the power supply to some customers in order to protect the power grid.
The new battery will generate enough energy to power about 30,000 homes in more than an hour.
This is one of several measures announced in Prime Minister Jay withermere\'s $0. 55 billion energy plan, which is caused by supply shortages, soaring prices and concerns about grid safety.
The plan also includes a diesel fleet.
Backup generator already installed before summer.
\"The world\'s largest lithium-ion battery will be an important part of our energy portfolio,\" Mr Weatherill said . \".
\"Delivery of this project in such a short time has done a lot of work and I look forward to going to Jamestown next week to personally thank those involved in this project.
\"At the end of September, Mr. witherer and Tesla boss Elon Musk visited the battery site, marking the midpoint of the construction.
The battery is privately owned by Neoen and Tesla.
Under normal circumstances, when the power is sufficient and cheap, the battery will be charged from the nearby Hornsdale wind farm.
Then, when the supply is made, the operator will have the right to sell some of them back to the grid
The balance of demand is tight and the price is higher.
The SA government will be able to use part of the battery output to provide stable services to the grid.
There is a market for these services, but there is limited competition in South Australia.
Sometimes, when South Australia is unable to import stable services from connectors with Victoria, the state pays high prices, which pushes up bills for families and businesses.
The government expects the battery to bring new competition to the market.
In addition, if the state is short of electricity and the load cut is imminent, the government will have the right to take advantage of the full output of the battery.
Coupled with the state\'s newly installed fleet of backup diesel generators, the battery could prevent thousands of households from accidentally losing power for about half an hour on a hot summer afternoon.
